בנימין נתניהו, בראיון ראשון מאז הבחירות, מתחשבן עם מי שבגדו בו, משלים עם מדינה פלסטינית ומפחד מהגרעין האיראני

זה היה אמור להיות ראיון בחירות. הזדמנות נדירה למנהיג האופוזיציה לומר את דברו במערכה שבה לא ממש ניתן לו לומר את דברו. אבל ברגע המכריע בנימין נתניהו אמר נואש. איבד את האמון ביכולתו להשפיע על התוצאה. איבד את האמון ביכולתו לבלום את הסחף הגדול נגדו. לא יקשיבו לי כעת, אמר. אין שום סיכוי שכשהאוויר כל כך מורעל יקשיבו לי. בוא נדחה זאת לאחר הבחירות. אומר את שיש לי לומר אחרי התבוסה בבחירות.

כך היה. שבועות אחדים היה מדוכדך מדי. אחר כך החל להסתבך בקרבות הסכינאים בליכוד. אחר כך התנתק והסתגר לכתוב ספר. עד שלפני שבועיים, פתאום התקשר. עכשיו, ביקש, מיד. כאילו חש שהנתונים של הצמיחה הכלכלית מוציאים את צדקתו לאור. הקשיים שבהתכנסות מוכיחים שהיה דבר מה בניתוח הביקורתי שלו. האפרוריות של ממשלת קדימה גורמת לאנשים ברחוב לשוב ולגלות בו עניין. הרי לו בכל זאת יש את התכונה החמקמקה הזו של מנהיגות. לו בכל זאת יש איזה שיעור קומה מדיני. איזה כובד משקל היסטורי.

נהג המונית זעם כששמע שזה ביבי על הקו. קצבאות הזקנה המכוסחות של חמותו. סל התרופות החסר של דודו. והעובדה שהוא ואשתו מרגישים מחוקים. מרגישים מעמד ביניים מחוק. מתוך עשרת אלפים שקל שהם מרוויחים לוקחת המשכנתא שלושה וחצי. מתוך השישה וחצי הנותרים הולכים שלושה למעונות היום של הילדים. אז על שלושה וחצי אלף מצפה ביבי שמשפחה עובדת תחיה? על שלושה וחצי אלף מצפה ביבי שיגדלו את ילדיהם להיות אזרחים ישראלים נאמנים? אין לו לב, לבנאדם הזה. איזה בומבה הביא על הראש של אנשים. ולא סתם אנשים. אנשים שתמכו בו. אנשים שהלכו אחריו. אנשים שנתנו את הנשמה בעדו.

אבל על המרפסת של מלון המלך דוד בירושלים, נשמעים גם קולות אחרים. פעם אחר פעם השיחה מופרעת על ידי תיירים יהודים מאוסטרליה ותיירים יהודים מדרום אפריקה ותיירים יהודים מקליפורניה המבקשים רק תמונה אחת. אמיד משי במגבעת שחורה ניגש אל נתניהו ואומר כואב הלב עליך, ביבי. כואב הלב. פעמיים הצלת את המדינה ופעמיים זרקו אותך. איזו רשעות לב. איזו כפיות טובה. אחרי האוטובוסים המתפוצצים הבאת לנו שקט, אחרי שהכלכלה כמעט קרסה הבאת לנו פריחה גדולה. ודווקא אלה שהכית בהם עדיין אתך. עדיין מאמינים בך. אבל אלה שהעשרת אותם והזנקת את המניות שלהם אלה תקעו לך סכין בגב. אבל אתה תחזור, ביבי. מבטיח לך שתחזור.

שרה בדיוק עברה ניתוח גב והיא נחה בחדר המלון ששכרו. כך שנתניהו מדלג משיחה על הגרעין האיראני למשחק כדורגל על הדשא עם אחד הבנים. משיחה על עתיד הציוויליזציה המערבית לבירור בעניין הפרוגנוזה של חוליות-עמוד-השדרה. הוא עדיין ממעט לחייך אבל כבר לא מדוכדך. כואב אך לא ממורמר. נדמה לו שהוא חש איזה שינוי בשבועות האחרונים. האופן שבו אנשים ניגשים אליו בכל מקום. האופן שבו אנשים מקשיבים לו. כאילו הם מתחילים להבין שקרה דבר מה חמור במערכת הבחירות הזאת. כאילו הם מתחילים להבין שניצלו אותם. הונו אותם. הוליכו אותם שולל.


נתניהו תמיד נעים יותר כשהוא מוכה

זאב ז'בוטינסקי. נתניהו אוהב לדבר היסטוריה ותהליכים חובקי עולם
ראש הממשלה אהוד אולמרט בדיוק כובש את וושינגטון. נתניהו לא חושף את רגשותיו אבל מטיל על השולחן דף ציטטות מתוך הנאום שהוא נשא בפני שני בתי הקונגרס מיד לאחר שנבחר לראשות הממשלה ב-1996. הנבואות שניבא כבר אז. האזהרות שהזהיר. קלינטון לא רצה לשמוע, אבל ביבי תיאר במפורש מה צפוי להתרחש באיראן. חמש שנים לפני מגדלי התאומים, הוא משוכנע שלימד את האמריקאים שהאיסלאם הקנאי הוא הרוע החדש.

נתניהו תמיד נעים יותר כשהוא מוכה. פחות יהיר, פחות מתנשא, יותר קשוב. מתיישב בכורסה העמוקה בבר ספון העץ של המלך דוד, קוצץ בקפידה את קצה הסיגר ומגלגל היסטוריוסופיה. אוהב מאוד את משיכות המכחול הגדולות. את המבט חובק העולם. התחלפות המאות, התנגשות התרבויות. הופעתן והיעלמותן של אומות, עלייתן ושקיעתן של אימפריות. והצירוף הזה של מדדים מאקרו-כלכליים עם תהליכי עומק היסטוריים. נוחי דנקנר וגיבון; שלמה נחמה ונורדאו; ירון זילכה, זאב ז'בוטינסקי ואיתן ורטהיימר.

לאן הוא חותר? לא ברור. יעבור זמן עד שהספר יהיה כתוב וערוך ומוכן. יעבור זמן עד שהליכוד יאושש וישוקם. אבל נדמה שנתניהו מתחיל לחוש את הפוטנציאל הגלום בריק המנהיגותי המסוים שאריאל שרון הותיר אחריו. הוא מביט לכאן ולכאן ולא רואה מי באמת יאפיל עליו. מי ראוי יותר ממנו להנהיג את האומה בשעת המבחן הגדולה שעל מפתנה הוא מאמין שאנו עומדים.

מדוע כשלת בבחירות 2006?

"מפני שהליכוד התפלג בפעולה מתוכננת של מי שעמד בראשו. היתה התפרקות רעיונית והיה פילוג ארגוני שקרעו את התנועה לגזרים. כמו כן, חלקים מהציבור כעסו על הצעדים הכלכליים שביצעתי ולא האמינו שתבוא התאוששות שתאפשר לטפל במצוקותיהם, כפי שהתברר מיד אחרי הבחירות".

אבל עניין הליכוד היה רק משתנה אחד במשוואה. משתנה אחר היית אתה. נתקלת בהתנגדות חסרת תקדים.

"לפני שנים כתבת על התופעה הזאת של השנאה כלפי. היום, לאחר הבחירות, אני חש בשינוי. אנשים מקשיבים לי. אנשים קולטים שהצמיחה של 6.6% קשורה לדברים שאני עשיתי. חלקם קולטים שיש משהו פגום באלוהי-החימר של ההתנתקות וההתכנסות. אבל בזמן אמת, בתקופת מערכת הבחירות, המקהלה המוכרת התגייסה. העדר שוב נהר. בעקבות ספינים תקשורתיים של אנשי הקמפיין במפלגה מסוימת, החשודים המוכרים התלהקו שוב וידעו מה לומר ומה לשדר ואלו עובדות לעוות. על כן התוצאות היו ידועות מראש".

ידעת מראש שתפסיד?

"ידעתי זאת חודשים לפני הבחירות. זה היה מאבק נגד כל הסיכויים".

אז ניהלת את כל הקמפיין הגדול הזה מתוך ידיעה שאין שום תקווה, שזה אבוד?

"כן".

הרגשת שאתה מסומן?

"בתקשורת? בוודאי. אבל זה לא חדש. מה שהיה חדש הוא שהפעם היו בכל זאת עיתונאים מסוימים שהיו הוגנים ולא נסחפו עם הזרם".

ככלל, התקשורת שירתה את קדימה?

"ללא ספק. אמנם היו חריגים, אבל שוב ראינו את ריכוז הכוח והעלמת העובדות ועיוות האמת. ראינו פוליטיקאים ואנשי תקשורת עושים יד אחת כדי לשרת אלה את אלה. גורמים בתקשורת מסוגלים ליצור אמת ליממה. אבל אם היממה היא יממת הבחירות, היממה הזאת קובעת".

ההרגשה שלך כמועמד היתה שאינך יכול להשמיע את קולך?

"אתה יכול להשמיע את קולך אבל לא באמת מקשיבים לך. אתה עומד מול חומות של זלזול וביטול. יוצרים מצג שווא, כאילו עד שהגיע האיש הרע הזה, אני, לא היה בישראל עוני. כאילו הפערים החברתיים לא גדלו במשך עשרים שנה. ומשכיחים לחלוטין את העובדה שכאשר אני נכנסתי לאוצר, הכלכלה עמדה להתרסק כמו בארגנטינה. קרנות הפנסיה עמדו לקרוס. הצמיחה היתה מינוס 1.3%. נגיד בנק ישראל הזהיר מפני פשיטת רגל של בנק מרכזי. המצב היה על סף יום כיפור כלכלי שבו העוני היה מתרחב ומעמיק בצורה מבהילה, וכמדינה היינו קורסים. את כל זה לא אמרו. את כל זה טישטשו. עיוותו את המציאות באופן מוחלט ומרושע".

לא רק התקשורת התנגדה לך. גם אנשי העסקים שאותם טיפחת והעשרת פנו בסופו של דבר נגדך.

"אני לא יודע אם אנשי העסקים פנו נגדי אבל הם בוודאי לא התייצבו לצדי. כמעט איש מהם לא התייצב לצדי. ידעתי מראש שרובם חולקים על גישתי המדינית. אבל הייתי מצפה שאחדים מהם יקומו ויאמרו אנחנו חולקים על נתניהו מדינית אבל תומכים בגישתו הכלכלית. הייתי מצפה שכאשר מקהלות שלמות זימרו שאני הרסתי את המדינה יהיה מי שיקום ויאמר שזה לא כך. שזהו ספין פופוליסטי שאיננו במקום. אבל זה לא קרה. דווקא בתקשורת היו כמה עיתונאים אמיצים וישרים שעשו זאת. אבל בקהילת העסקים היודעת היטב את האמת כמעט אף אחד לא קם. אולי היה להם חשש. הם ראו את הסקרים. הם ראו לאן נושבת הרוח. הם ראו היכן יהיה הכוח".

יש לך תחושה שנהגו כלפיך בכפיות טובה?

"כן. הקדשתי שלוש שנים מחיי לעבודת פרך, ימים כלילות, כדי להציל את כלכלת המדינה. לכן, זה כאב לי. חשתי אכזבה עמוקה. מודעות התמיכה היחידות במדיניות הכלכלית שלי הגיעו מפרופסורים של המחנה הלאומי, שאינם ידועים כשחקנים גדולים בתחום ההון".

נפגעת.

"בוודאי שנפגעתי. אני בן אדם. גם התאכזבתי מכך שבני אדם הם כל כך חלשים ברגעי מבחן. ממש חלשים. כנראה האינטרס המיידי שלהם כל כך חזק וכל כך כופה עד כדי כך שהם לא מסוגלים להתגבר עליו. אבל אני כשר אוצר התגברתי על האינטרס האישי שלי. הלכתי נגד הבוחרים שלי. כדי להציל את כלכלת ישראל הייתי מוכן לשפוך על כך דם פוליטי. דם פוליטי שלי. ומהאנשים הללו לא ציפיתי שישפכו את דמם. כל שציפיתי מהם היה שלא ישפכו את דמי".

אתה כואב.

"יש כאב. אני לא מתבוסס בו. יש רגעים של מרירות אבל מרירות לא תורמת דבר. אם תגרד את הפצעים שוב ושוב תישאר אתם לעולם. לכן אני משתדל להניח להם. ללכת הלאה".

איפה היית בערב של ה-28 במרץ כאשר על צגי הטלוויזיות הליכוד התרסק?

"הייתי בבית חברים בתל אביב עם אשתי, שני ילדי וכמה חברים טובים".

והתחושה?

"קשה. כאב לי בעיקר לראות את בני הקטן בוכה ואת הכאב על פניו של בני הבכור".

חשבת שאולי זה הסוף? שמהקרשים האלו כבר לא תקום?

"דווקא ברגעים האלה שבהם אתה מקבל אגרוף בפנים אני מתפקד היטב. הייתי קר רוח ושקט. המשימה הראשונה שלי היתה להרגיע את ילדי. כעבור חצי שעה כבר הייתי בגני התערוכה. לא, לא חשבתי שזה הסוף. יש בי את הנאיביות להאמין שבסוף יהיה מישהו שבכל זאת יראה את האמת. יהיה מישהו שיבדוק מה נעשה כאן. מה באמת קרה בכלכלה".

מה קרה בכלכלה?

"ישראל הפכה לאחד המנועים הכלכליים החזקים בעולם. מצמיחה של מינוס 1.3% לצמיחה של 6.6% בשלוש שנים - אין דבר כזה בעולם. אין מדינה מתקדמת בעולם ששינתה כיוון במהירות כזו בשנים האחרונות".

ושיעור הצמיחה הזה יכול להתמיד?

"בוודאי, אבל רק אם נתמיד במדיניות שהובלתי. אם המהפכה שאותה חוללתי לא תיבלם, ישראל תצמח בקצב של שישה עד שבעה אחוזים בשנה בכל אחת מעשר השנים הקרובות. פירוש הדבר הוא הכפלת התל"ג בעשור. כלכלה של רבע טריליון דולר ב-2016. אחת מהכלכלות המובילות בעולם".

אתה באמת מאמין בנסיקת המשק הישראלי?

"ודאי, איזו שאלה. הוא לא נופל במאומה מהטייגר הסינגפורי או הטייגר הקלטי (סמל לשווקים המתעוררים). טועה מי שחושב שחינוך לבדו מביא לצמיחה. בבולגריה רמת החינוך גבוהה אבל החיים הם חיי עוני מפני שלא היתה בה מהפכת שוק. כאשר יש צירוף של שוק חופשי עם חינוך וטכנולוגיה, השמים הם הגבול. בזמנו דיברתי על השמן והרזה. בשלוש שנים שינינו את היחס בין השמן של המגזר הציבורי לבין הרזה של המגזר העסקי מ-56:44 ל-50:50. הורדת הסקטור הציבורי אל מתחת ל-40% והסרת מגף המעורבות הממשלתית והחסמים בפני תחרות יביאו אותנו אל אותה צמיחה של שישה-שבעה אחוזים בשנה אשר תוציא אותנו אל מרחב כלכלי שונה לחלוטין".

והפערים? אי הצדק החברתי?

"שיאם מאחורינו. במשאבים הנוצרים כבר היום על ידי מנוע הצמיחה אפשר להגיע לשיעור העוני הנמוך בעולם בתוך שלוש או ארבע שנים".

אם כל כך הצלחת כשר אוצר, איפה בכל זאת טעית? איך הגעת להיות שנוא כל כך?

"תמיד הייתי זהיר בניהול כספים. גם בניהול כספי שלי וגם בניהול כספי המדינה. לא הוצאתי כסף שלא היה לי. יכול להיות שהייתי צריך לחלק את חלק מההטבות החברתיות חצי שנה מוקדם יותר. הזהירות שלי היתה בעוכרי".

והיתה ההתפטרות. במבט לאחור היא נראית כמו הטעות הפוליטית הגדולה של כל הזמנים. לא מנעת את ההתנתקות, איפשרת את ההתכנסות ושללת מעצמך את ראשות הממשלה.

"אני לא מתיימר להיות פוליטיקאי מזהיר. אני חושב שאני מדינאי ומנהיג יותר משאני פוליטיקאי. אני רואה את הנולד. אני מבין באילו אמצעים צריך לנקוט אל מול מציאות מתפתחת. אבל אני לא סחבק. בניגוד לדעה הרווחת, אין לי יכולת תמרון טובה מול עיתונאים ועורכים. אין לי נכונות להטיב עם בעלי ההון הריכוזי ועם בעלי ההשפעה. חסרים לי כישורים מסוימים וחסרים לי קישורים. גם יש גבול למשחק שאני מוכן לשחק.

"מה שמתברר הוא שהיכולת להרחיק ראות היא חיסרון לפוליטיקאי. כשדיברתי ב-1996 על התוכניות הגרעיניות של איראן הציבור לא התחבר לכך. כשאמרתי ב-2003 שנהיה לאחת הכלכלות המשגשגות בעולם חשבו שאני הוזה בהקיץ. וגם עכשיו, כשאני אומר שאפשר למחוק את העוני תוך שלוש שנים, מתקשים להאמין לי. הציבור מתקשה להעריך פרוגנוזות ארוכות טווח".

לאחרונה מדברים יותר ויותר על שחיתות. היית ראש ממשלה, היית שר אוצר. ישראל היא מדינה מושחתת?

"יש בישראל שחיתות. היא הולכת וגדלה. בשנים האחרונות היא גדלה ומעמיקה בקצב מסחרר. אבל המדברים על השחיתות מחטיאים על פי רוב את המטרה. הם מדברים על הקשר בין חבר המרכז לבין הפוליטיקאי המסדר לו ג'וב כדי לרכוש את תמיכתו. אבל התופעה הזו היא מינורית יחסית. גם כשהיא מתרחשת, ההיקף החומרי שלה מוגבל. לכן אני טוען שהיא רק קצה קרחון השחיתות. היא העשירית הפחות חשובה הנמצאת מעל פני המים. השחיתות היותר חמורה נמצאת מתחת לפני המים. עליה כמעט לא מדברים. עליה כמעט לא יודעים. אבל דווקא היא המדאיגה. היא הסכנה האמיתית".

על מה אתה מדבר?

"אני מדבר על הפוליטיקאי הבכיר או הפקיד הבכיר המחלק נכסים לבעל הון שמשלם לו על כך כסף. הרבה כסף".

אתה מדבר על שוחד. שוחד של ממש.

"כן. שוחד במעטפות. שוחד בהעברה של מיליונים לחשבונות בנק בוואדוז או באיי קיימן".

אתה רציני? אתה באמת טוען שמאחורי החלטות מרכזיות במשק עומדים חשבונות בנק בוואדוז ובאיי קיימן?

"אתה יודע היטב מה התשובה".

בישראל של שנות האלפיים נכסים במיליארדים מועברים לידיים מסוימות תמורת שוחד?

"הקביעה שלך אינה דמיונית לחלוטין".

באילו ענפים?

"נכסי המדינה מרוכזים בכמה מצבורים. מינהל מקרקעי ישראל הוא החשוב מכולם. השני הוא הרכש הממשלתי. השלישי הוא שוק האנרגיה. הרביעי הוא החברות הממשלתיות והחמישי הוא השלטון המקומי. בתחום הרכש הממשלתי ביצענו רפורמות של מכרוז ושקיפות אשר מבטלות כמעט לחלוטין את אפשרות ההשחתה. אבל אל מינהל מקרקעי ישראל ואל שוק האנרגיה לא נתנו לי להתקרב. ולא במקרה. אני מעריך שההיקף הגדול של השחיתות הוא בתחום הנדל"ן. תמורת טיוב קרקע במאות מיליונים או מיליארדים פוליטיקאי או פקיד עשוי לקבל מיליונים. אבל יש בעיה גם בתחום האנרגיה ובחברות הממשלתיות. בשלטון המקומי זו כמעט מגיפה. בכל מקום שבו הריכוזיות גדולה והשקיפות נמוכה יש בעיה קשה של שחיתות. זה בדיוק כפי שלורד אקטון קבע: כל כוח משחית, וכוח מוחלט משחית באופן מוחלט".

מי מנע ממך בעצם גישה לענייני קרקעות ואנרגיה?

"במשא ומתן עם שרון הובהר לנציגי, עו"ד יצחק מולכו, על ידי נציגו, עו"ד דב ויסגלס, שלא תהיה כל העברת סמכויות בנושא מינהל מקרקעי ישראל. גם ענייני האנרגיה החשובים נוהלו מתוך לשכת ראש הממשלה מבלי שלי תינתן אליהם נגישות של ממש".

בחוגים מקצועיים אתה נחשב לנקי כפיים, אבל בציבור הרחב נוצרה תחושה שגם אתה מושחת.

"הטענה הזו ממש מקוממת אותי. זהו אחד הספינים המרושעים והשקריים ביותר שהאכילו בו את הציבור. כראש ממשלה וכשר אוצר חלשתי על מאות מיליארדים, על מכרזים וחוזים בסכומי עתק, ומעולם, מעולם, לא דבק בי רבב".

אולי הדימוי המושחת שלך נובע מהקשרים האינטימיים שלך עצמך עם בעלי הון?

"הפוך. ידידי מעולם לא זכו לעדנה בגלל ידידותם. העובדה שהיו ידידים שלי לא שירתה את האינטרסים שלהם ולא מנעה ממני לפעול לעתים קרובות נגדם. כאשר מכרנו את בנק דיסקונט, מי שזכה במכרז (משפחת ברונפמן) הוא מי שמימן את יריבי הפוליטי. כאשר מכרנו את בזק, חברים שלי שניגשו למכרז הפסידו ואילו זה שזכה (חיים סבן) סייע ליריבי הפוליטים. העובדה שאחד ממנהלי הבנקים הגדולים הוא גם חבר שלי לא מנעה ממני ליזום רפורמה שהחלישה מאוד את הבנקים. אל תשכח שכאשר סיימתי את תפקידי כראש ממשלה הדאגה שלי היתה אחת: איך אאכיל את משפחתי. אני לא יכול לומר שלא היה לי גרוש על הנשמה, אבל היה לי מעט מאוד. היו לי דירה ברחוב עזה בירושלים, חשבון בנק לא מרשים במיוחד, שני ילדים קטנים ופנסיה של 4,000 שקל בחודש. פוליטיקאי ישר חי ממשכורתו וכך נהגתי. קיבלתי תשלום על ספרים שכתבתי, אבל לא האמנתי שמותר לי לעשות לביתי תוך כדי חיי הפוליטיים. מצבי הכלכלי השתנה רק אחרי שפרשתי מהחיים הציבוריים".

בהיותך בעמדות כוח ניסו אי פעם לשחד אותך?

"פעם אחת ניסו לגשת אלי. זה נעשה בתחכום גדול ובזהירות רבה. דחיתי זאת על הסף וזה נפסק. לא נתתי לזה להתפתח".

אם היית נעתר להצעה היית הופך לאדם עשיר?

"מאוד".

מי הציע את השוחד?

"עבור הלאה".

"ההצעה הועברה אלי באופן מתוחכם מאוד. לא נתתי לה להתפתח. עצרתי אותה לפני שהיא קיבלה מובהקות".

כלומר אנחנו יכולים להניח שפוליטיקאים בכירים אחרים ברמה שלך מקבלים הצעות מהסוג הזה לפרקים. באים אליהם בעלי הון עם הצעות שהאטרקטיוויות שלהן מופלגת.

"מן הסתם".

לשיטתך, אסור לפוליטיקאי להיות עשיר?

"חד משמעית כן. ראה את המדדים הבינלאומיים לבחינת שחיתות. אבל יחד עם זאת חשוב להדגיש שכאשר מדובר על הקשר הון-שלטון, רוב בעלי ההון אינם בקשר. גם רבים מאנשים השלטון אינם בקשר. אבל בין קבוצה קטנה של אנשי הון לבין קבוצה מסוימת של אנשי שלטון יש קשר שסדר הגודל שלו מדהים. ועל כן אני אומר שהשחיתות היתה לסרטן. היא אבן ריחיים על המשק. היא מכבידה על הצמיחה, ועלולה להתפתח לממדים ארגנטיניים. ארגנטינה היא מדינה עשירה מאוד שקפאה כלכלית בגלל שהשחיתות היתה בה למארה. ברגע שהמדינה שוקעת בביצה של שחיתות קשה, מאוד קשה, לצאת ממנה".

מדוע קרחון השחיתות שאתה מדבר עליו לא נחשף עד היום?

"שני כוחות אמורים לחשוף את השחיתות. האחד הוא מערכות האכיפה של החוק והשני הוא התקשורת. ואולם כאשר השחיתות מעמיקה את חדירתה היא חודרת גם למערכת האכיפה וגם למערכות התקשורת. בעיה נוספת היא שפוליטיקאים מסוימים מקבלים חסינות מפני חשיפת השחיתות שלהם כיוון שהם מקדמים אג'נדה פוליטית רצויה".

אתה מדבר על האתרוג, החסינות התקשורתית שאמנון אברמוביץ' הציע לתת לאריאל שרון כגיבוי להתנתקות?

"אני חושב שתפקיד התקשורת אינו לאתרג את השחיתות אלא לאתגר אותה. ואני מדבר על השחיתות האמיתית. על השחיתות המעבירה נכסי מדינה לידיים מסוימות תמורת כסף. את השחיתות הזאת צריך לחשוף. הדברים אינם קלים להוכחה. אבל המידע מסתובב. עיתונאים יודעים. גורמי אכיפת חוק יודעים. ובכל זאת המושחתים אינם נענשים. יש בישראל תופעה ברורה של מושחת וטוב לו".

אתה בעצם טוען שפוליטיקאי מושחת המתחייב לנסיגה מקבל חסינות.

"לפי אחד מעמיתיך הוא צריך לקבל חסינות".

ואתה טוען שזו לא עמדת יחיד.

"אתה יודע שלא".

בעצם אתה מאשים את התקשורת בחיפוי על השחיתות.

"חלק ניכר מהתקשורת אינו ממלא את תפקידו בעניין זה".

אתה עדיין חושב שההתנתקות היתה טעות?

"תומכי ההתנתקות טענו לפני ביצועה שהיא תביא ליציבות ביחסים בינינו לבין הפלסטינים. הם טענו שהיא תסייע לאבו מאזן ולא תגרום לירי על ישראל. לעומת זאת, חברי ואני טענו שההתנתקות תחזק את החמאס, תקרב את הקסאמים אל אשקלון ותאפשר הכנסת מערכות נשק חדשות לשטחים שיפונו. אמור לי אתה מי צדק".

וההישגים? התמיכה הבינלאומית?

"איזה הישגים? איזו תמיכה בינלאומית? מישהו בעולם מכיר בקווים שקבענו? למרות שנטשנו את עזה עד לסנטימטר האחרון, אפילו ידידינו הטובים ביותר לא מוכנים להצהיר שהכיבוש של עזה הסתיים".

הנה אולמרט נסע לוושינגטון וכבש את גבעת הקפיטול. עוד שני ביקורים כאלה וארצות הברית תכיר בקו הגדר כגבול הקבע של ישראל.

"יש לי ספקות בעניין זה. בכל מקרה, מה שהיה בעזה נגמר. אני לא מצפה שנכבוש מחדש את הרצועה כדי להקים בה מחדש יישובים. זה לא יקרה. אני בוודאי לא אוביל מהלך כזה. אבל עכשיו אנחנו צריכים לחשוב מה אנחנו עושים קדימה, סליחה על הביטוי. אולמרט דיבר על פינוי כל היהודים שמעבר לגדר עד 2010. פירוש הדבר הוא פינוי של שבעים עד מאה אלף בני אדם מבתיהם, הוצאה של עד מאה מיליארד שקלים - שעבוד מוחלט של הכלכלה שלנו והעתיד שלנו ליעד חסר שחר, שכן הפרדת אוכלוסיות קיימת בפועל כבר כעת. איננו שולטים על כ-98% מהפלסטינים. ואילו הכרה בינלאומית בקו הנסיגה לא תהיה. רשום מה שאני אומר לך: לא תהיה. כדי לקבל הכרה בינלאומית נצטרך לחזור לקווי 67', וגם אז ההכרה תהיה חלקית ומוגבלת. בעיני חלק ממדינות העולם אפילו קווי 67' אינם לגיטימיים. כך שכל מה שיקרה הוא שנוציא סכומי עתק כדי להעביר מתנחלים מגבעה זאת לגבעה אחרת תוך כדי ריסוק חייהם, ובכך לא נשיג לא שלום ולא ביטחון אלא להיפך. נגרום לכך שגם אם יתחולל בעתיד שינוי בחברה הפלסטינית לא יישארו בידינו קלפים למשא ומתן על שלום. על הסדר קבע. שהרי את כל הקלפים פיזרנו על השולחן סתם כך, סתם כך. ללא מחשבה, ללא כל היגיון וללא תכלית".

אתה רואה אפשרות להסדר קבע עם הפלסטינים בדור הנוכחי?

"לא כל עוד איראן מתעצמת. אבל אם איראן תפורק מעוצמתה ותשנה כיוון אני מאמין שבכל רחבי העולם הערבי הכוחות השפויים יתחזקו. כך גם בחברה הפלסטינית. ייתכן שכתוצאה מההתשה של הציבור הפלסטיני, החמאס יובס. כאשר רוב הפלסטינים יכירו בכך שהם צריכים לבחור בין מדינה איסלאמית חשוכה שמנהלת קרב אפוקליפטי עם המדינה היהודית, לבין הכרה הדדית ופשרה, יהיה לנו פרטנר".

ולפרטנר הפלסטיני הראוי תסכים למסור חבלי ארץ ביהודה ושומרון?

"את בקעת הירדן ואת המעברים נצטרך לשמור בידינו כדי למנוע את הפיכתו של השטח הפלסטיני לבסיס חמוש שיסכן את עצם קיומנו".

אוקיי. אבל האם תסכים לקבל את העיקרון של חלוקת הארץ על בסיס של תוכנית אלון?

"תוכנית אלון מורחבת. אנחנו זקוקים לחומת מגן בשטחים הריקים של בקעת הירדן ומדבר יהודה. אנחנו חייבים לשלוט בגבולות ובמרחב האווירי".

תסכים לקבל את הרעיון של שתי מדינות לשני עמים?

"לא מדובר ברעיון. מדובר במציאות בשטח, ובמציאות אני מכיר".

כלומר גם אתה, יו"ר הליכוד, מנהיג הימין הלאומי, מקבל בעצם את העובדה שלא תהיה ארץ ישראל שלמה וכי בסופו של דבר יישובי גב ההר יפונו כדי לחלק את הארץ בין מדינה יהודית-דמוקרטית לבין מדינה פלסטינית.

"אני לא בעד חלוקת הארץ. אני מכיר בה. זו המציאות שנוצרה. לא נחזיר את השעון לאחור".

אם כך אתה הרבה פחות ימני ממה שמקובל לחשוב. ההתנגדות שלך לנסיגה שהיתה ולנסיגה שתהיה אינה עקרונית אלא טקטית.

"אני לא מטיף לאחיזה רליגיוזית בכל סנטימטר של טריטוריה. אני יוצא כנגד התקדים של פינוי ללא תמורה, ללא הסכם ובתגובה ללחץ. בעקומת ההתפתחות של הציונות פינינו יישובים. כשלא היתה ברירה פינינו את גוש עציון. כשהיה הסכם שלום פינינו את יישובי סיני. הפינויים האלו אינם דומים למתרחש כעת. אנחנו מתפנים כתוצאה מלחץ של אויב שאיננו עוצר אחרי עקירה מגוש קטיף ולא יעצור אחרי עקירה של יישובים ביהודה ושומרון. הכניעה הזאת ללחץ היא הרת אסון. יש לה השפעה עצומה על המוטיווציה להמשיך וללחוץ אותנו. על כן אין כאן קירוב השלום אלא הרחקת השלום. אין כאן מתן ביטחון אלא ערעור הביטחון.

"מעל הכל יש כאן הקרנה של חולשת הרצון הלאומי. הקרנת חולשה מסוג זה אל מול כוח רצון לאומי נגדי ההולך והופך יותר דתי ויותר קנאי היא איוולת. ההשלכה החמורה ביותר שלה היא מול איראן. אני לא חושב שההתכנסות הגדולה היא תוכנית מעשית, אבל ברור לי שהיא שוחקת את כוח ההרתעה שלנו מול כוחות קיצוניים באזורנו. כאשר ישראל מגיבה על לחץ בשתיקה, בנסיגה, בעקירה ובהתכנסות מדומה בתוך עצמה, השדר הנקלט ברחבי המזרח התיכון הוא שדר של חולשה. במצב הדרמטי שאליו אנחנו נכנסים כעת שדר כזה הוא רע. מאוד רע".

עד כמה איראן מטרידה אותך?

"מאוד. אבל לא מדובר רק על איראן. בעיית התחמשות גרעינית עלולה לצוץ גם במדינות אחרות. רבים עדיין לא מבינים זאת, אבל תקופת הדמדומים עומדת להסתיים. אנחנו נכנסים לעידן חדש. אנחנו עומדים לעמוד בפני עולם אחר. העידן החדש הזה צריך להדיר שינה מעיניו של כל אדם שפוי".

על מה אתה מדבר?

"המאה ה-19 היתה מאה מסודרת ויציבה יחסית. היא הפנימה את הלקח שאותו למדה אירופה מ-500 שנות מלחמה: חובה להגיע לפשרות והסדרים. המאה ה-20 ראתה חריג בולט אחד לתפישה הנאורה של ניהול העולם - הנאציזם. הקומוניזם אמנם התעלם מהטבע האנושי בניהול החברה והכלכלה, אך הוא גילה אחריות מופלגת במניעת מלחמה עולמית. לעומת זאת, כעת אנו עומדים בפני זן של איסלאם הכופר בפשרה ובדו קיום ומאמין בצורך להכפיף יריבים בכוח החרב על מנת להחזיר איזו פנטסיה של שלטון המוסלמים הטהורים בעולם. כאשר החרב בידי אותם מוסלמים תהיה חרב גרעינית, העולם יהיה לעולם אחר. האנושות כולה תעמוד בנקודה אחרת בהיסטוריה. מה שהיה תקף מול ברית המועצות לא יהיה תקף כאן. נמצא את עצמנו עומדים אל מול ברברים חדשים. אל מול אתגר שכמוהו לא ידעה הציוויליזציה המערבית מעולם".

איראן היא איום על האנושות?

"כן. הבעיה היא שמאז אלכסנדר מוקדון ועד היום המערב תמיד גבר על הברברים. יתרון החופש העניק ללוחמים מוטיבציה יותר גבוהה וצייד אותם במערכות נשק יותר מתקדמות. ואולם כעת אנחנו עומדים בפני האפשרות שמדינות נחשלות וקנאיות יצליחו לרכז די משאבים כדי להשיג פצצות אטום. די יהיה בראש חץ גרעיני אחד כדי שכל מאזן הכוח מול המערב ישתנה מהקצה אל הקצה. לכן אנחנו נמצאים כעת ברגע דרמטי מאין כמותו. שני כוחות דמוניים בקיום האנושי עומדים להיפגש: הצד האפל בטבע האנושי והנשק הגרעיני. אין אנלוגיה היסטורית לרגע הזה. זוהי תפנית בתולדות האנושות".

איך נערכים לעידן החדש?

"באמצעות אסטרטגיה משולבת של מניעה והרתעה. החדשות הרעות הן שהעולם החדש הוא מקום מאיים ובלתי יציב. אבל החדשות הטובות הן שלישראל עוצמות כלכליות, טכנולוגיות וצבאיות המאפשרות לה להתמודד עם הסכנה. הכלכלה הישראלית החדשה, הצומחת במהירות מואצת, יכולה לממן את הפרויקטים השונים הנדרשים להגנתנו".

האם לא מאוחר מדי? האם לא נגזר עלינו להשלים עם איראן גרעינית?

"בשום פנים ואופן לא. חייבים למנוע את הגרעון של איראן".

בכל מחיר? בכל דרך?

"חייבים למנוע את הגרעון של איראן".

דוקטרינת בגין תקפה?

"בגין מנע גרעון בדרך אחת. יש גם דרכים אחרות ויש כוחות אחרים".

יש סיכוי למניעה מדינית?

"הייתי שמח אם הייתי יכול להאמין בכך. יחד עם זאת, יש לאפשר לארצות הברית למצות את המהלך המדיני הבינלאומי".

כמה זמן נותר?

"אנחנו בזמן שהולך ומתכלה. ניסיון העבר מלמד שמדינות המנהלות פרויקט גרעין שאפתני מגיעות ליעדן מוקדם מן הצפוי ולא מאוחר מן הצפוי".

אתה רואה אנלוגיה לשנות ה-40?

"ההבדל הוא בכך שיש לנו היום מדינה חזקה מאוד עם יכולות חזקות מאוד. בשנות ה-40 העולם החופשי התעשת, אבל הוא עשה זאת אחרי שאותנו האסון כבר פקד. אני משוכנע שגם הפעם העולם יתעשת ויתגבר, אבל עלינו לוודא שהוא לא יעשה זאת אחרי שאותנו שוב תפקוד טרגדיה. על כן על ישראל לבנות בריתות עם אחרים אבל לא לבנות על הבריתות הללו. עלינו לבנות כבר עכשיו את כוח המגן שלנו ולבצר את קיומנו הלאומי. עלינו להיות ערוכים לאפשרות שניאלץ להגן על עצמנו בכוחות עצמנו".

WARSAW (Reuters) - Pope Benedict's speech in Auschwitz was the most introspective and moving address of his papacy, but some who heard it still thought he did not go far enough.

Ending a four-day pilgrimage to Poland on Sunday, the 79-year-old Pontiff reflected on how hard it was for a German to visit the former Nazi death camp and how challenging the evil committed there was for anyone who believed in a loving God.

His bold decision to ask at the infamous death camp the question that made millions lose their faith after the Holocaust won headlines in many newspapers around Europe on Monday.

"God, why did you remain silent?" Rome's La Repubblica quoted him as asking in reference to the killing there of about 1.5 million people, mostly Jews. Germany's Berliner Zeitung chose another of his blunt questions: "Where was God?"

But just as many commentators focused on what he did not say, especially about Catholic anti-Semitism and the role the Vatican played while the Holocaust was raging.

Some faulted him for not clearly mentioning anti-Semitism, others for saying Germany was taken over by criminals in the 1930s, as if Adolf Hitler had not had any popular support.

John Wilkins, former editor of the British Catholic weekly The Tablet, gave Benedict high marks for the speech but said he felt sensitive issues such as the long history of Catholic anti-Semitism were left out.

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

"It was a wonderful speech, but I think some opportunities were missed," he told Reuters. "Something could have been said about how many Christians did not act very well back then."

"It's symbolically important that Pope Benedict went to Auschwitz, but I was expecting a different speech," Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League told La Stampa in Turin, noting that the Pope did not expressly condemn anti-Semitism.

Commentators also asked about the Vatican's role during the Holocaust, when Pope Pius XII did not speak out against Nazi oppression of the Jews.

One sore point is that the Vatican has not opened all its wartime files to historians, who want to know what Pius knew, when he knew it and what he discussed with his aides about it.

"While the Pope made clear in Auschwitz that he did not want to close the book on the past, the Vatican is not ready to open its archives from the war years," wrote the Rotterdam daily Algemeen Dagblad.

VERY JEWISH SPEECH

The Paris Catholic daily La Croix said dwelling on what was not in the speech "risks missing the great profundity of what he said" about God's absence or silence in the face of such evil.

"Loyal to his calling as a teacher, Benedict asked the question everyone -- believer or not -- asks."

In Poland, where the media mixed some criticism with mostly positive coverage of the visit, several commentators noted subtler tones than those highlighted abroad.

"The Pope's speech and visit were very Jewish to me," said Stanislaw Krajewski of the Polish Council of Christians and Jews. "The Pope quoted the psalms, which are also part of the Jewish tradition, and that creates a link.

"It was moving when he said clearly that the Nazis, by killing the Jewish nation, aimed to kill God," he said.

"Linking Christianity's roots with Judaism is a strong argument against anti-Semitism," said sociologist Jadwiga Staniszkis. "I think this speech should be read."

Nokia representatives are scheduled to arrive in Israel on Tuesday as part of an official delegation of 19 leading Finnish businessmen. This is the first such visit from Finland in 10 years.



The visit is sponsored by the Israeli embassy and the Israeli financial delegate in Finland, Moti Ish-Shalom.



Nokia is the largest company in Finland, producing 30-40 percent of all cellular phones in the world. It employs 60,000 people and sales last year totaled 34 million euros.



Boaz Hirsh, director of economic affairs at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor, said that the arrival of a top-level delegation from Finland indicates relations with the Scandinavian country may be warming up.



Israel's export to Finland totaled last year USD 121 million, and according the data 13 Israeli companies began operating in Finland last year.

Startup Ajax13 Inc. is looking to do to Linux what Microsoft Corp. is doing to Windows -- dissolve the operating system into the Web.

Under the shadow of Microsoft's enormous task of making all of its desktop products available as Web services, the small San Diego company is getting ready to launch in a few weeks what it calls AjaxOS, a desktop application that would link a Linux-based computer to Web applications that mimic some of the most popular desktop software used today.

To date, Ajax13 has launched as services word processing and spreadsheet programs, an application for building graphs and charts, a music player and an editor for mixing video, music and photos. More Web services are coming, but the company won't say what they are or when. The technological backbone of the company's products is Ajax, a methodology in Web development that fuses JavaScript and XML to make highly functional Web services. Using this technology, Ajax13, like many other companies, including Microsoft, Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc., can offer Web services that have the look and feel of desktop applications.

AjaxOS runs on Linspire, a desktop version of open source Linux developed by Linspire Inc. of San Diego. Entrepreneur Michael Robertson is chairman of Linspire and chief executive of Ajax13.

In a few weeks, Linspire users, which make up a sliver of the home computer market, would be able to either download AjaxOS from the Web or get it on CD. Once installed, the application makes all of Ajax13's Web services accessible as if they are running on the desktop, Jan Schwarz, president of the company said. Data could be stored locally on the computer or remotely over the Web. The company is negotiating with several potential storage providers, Schwarz said, but he refused to name them.

Ajax13's strategy follows what many in the industry see as an unstoppable trend -- the movement toward software as a service. Even Microsoft expects many of its own bulky applications that today sit on a home computer and have to be upgraded on a regular basis to eventually be replaced with Web services.

"We are very much focused on the push to the Internet-enabled PC," Schwarz said.

The current batch of Ajax13 services are only the beginning, and aren't expected to become major revenue generators, particularly since they're offered by far bigger players. Google, for example, recently bought Web word processor Writely.

Even AjaxOS is not seen as anything more than a product meant to serve a very small portion of the desktop computer market.

"We absolutely still have to push toward a very solid revenue model," Schwarz said.

For now, the company hopes to generate interest and notice with the services currently available. More are planned, and Schwarz promises the future products will be more unique and hold more revenue-generating potential. The company has yet to decide how it would charge for its applications. Possibilities include licensing the underlying technologies or offering subscriptions. Each of the company's individual services today is available at no charge to anyone with a Firefox Web browser, version 1.5 or higher.

Ajax13's funding primarily comes from Robertson. The company launched this year, but its technology was developed over the last three years by Chief Technology Officer Hisham El-Emam.

Barbera is an Italian varietal which is very popular in the Piemonte region of North West Italy. The wines made from barbera usually have a deep red colour are medium bodied and have a refreshing level of acidity.
THE VINEYARDS:
The grapes for this wine come from our Safsufa vineyard, in the Upper Galilee which is located in the foot hills of Mount Meron, at an altitude of about 620 meters.
WINEMAKING:
Close proximity of the vineyards to the winery allow the grapes to be processed as soon after picking as possible. Initial fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, and the wines were pumped over every day in order to ensure maximum colour extraction. After pressing and malolactic fermentation the wine was racked into year old French oak barrels for just under a year, before bottling.

How A.B. Yehoshua lost his crowd
The Israeli author chose to be annoying, thus disserving his cause, and failing to achieve a goal every Israeli should seek: connecting to Jewish Diaspora on a whole new level of dialog.

The title was promising and so were the panelists. "The Future of the Past: What will become of the Jewish people?" moderated by Ted Koppel and with the participation of the Cynthia Ozick, Rabbi Adin Steinzaltz, Leon Wieseltier, and Israeli author A.B. Yehoshua. It was the first session of the American Jewish Committee's Centennial symposium, and what a disastrous evening it was.

The blame goes first and foremost to the annoyingly impolite Yehoshua. Taking over the dialog with a simplistic (and quite old-fashioned) message of ultra-Zionism - he was such a disruptive participant as to dismantle the whole discussion. For a while, I thought the angry Wieseltier was going to punch him - but he chose a different path of protestation and just stopped talking altogether.

The crowed got angry, too. In the busses heading back to their hotels, participants were talking about Yehoshua in words unfit to print. So much so that this morning, AJC's Executive Director David Harris felt a need to comment on the evening's events. Yehoshua, he said, was "passionate" and was a "expressing classic Zionist" point of view. However, Harris added, he "didn't win many friends to his cause" - and believe me, this is the understatement of the year.

So what was Yehoshua saying that got everybody so annoyed? He said that the only way to be a Jew is to live in Israel - well, not a very original thought, nor a new one. So it was not exactly what he said, but more the way he chose to do it - the arrogant, dismissive, way in which he framed his arguments, and even more so, the fact that he didn't let the discussion to move forward.

Koppel looked simply stunned.

Late at night, when I got home, I went over my notes to find something worth writing about - some conclusions one can make of such an evening - and here is what I came up with. More fragments than real conclusion:

Loyalty

The most astonishing thing that was said in this evening was a statement by Ozick, who dared to utter the D word: "I have a dual loyalty," she said, to the U.S. and to Israel. Later, she tried to clarify. I wish I could have had a thousand loyalties, she said, but one can only find within himself enough passion as to have one or two - in her case two. To the inquisitorial Koppel, trying to understand what she will do if the two countries will some day have a difference of interests she had a vague - though interesting - answer. She just thinks ? and I'm paraphrasing here - that it can't happen. That her two beloved countries will not go in a direction that will force her to choose.

Anti-Semitism

The best one-liner of the evening belongs to Wieseltier (when he was still participating). Ozick - as to make a point about the possibility of anti-Semitism in the U.S. ? was bringing up the Walt-Mersheimer study, a topic without which no real discussion of the Jewish people can take place these days. The study, said Ozick, frightens me. And Wieseltier gave her an answer to be remembered: "I will take Walt-Mersheimer over the Kishinev pogroms any day."

Judaism

A couple of weeks ago I attended the Jewish Funders Network conference in Denver, and wrote about it extensively. The conference's title, "Plug and Play Judaism," referred to the way in which young Generation Y Jews deal with their Jewish identity. (Read "The Jews of Generation Y here). It was meant in a positive way - as a new means via which to connect to these youngsters. (Read "I met happy Jews" here).

But yesterday, plug and play Judaism was used in a derogatory way by Yehoshua. What kind of Judaism is it, he asked. "You're just playing - plug and play." He argued that the only way to be a "real" Jew is by exercising power, making decisions, in a complete manner - that is, in Israel, where every decision you make is necessarily, to some extent "Jewish." And if you try to pinpoint the ongoing argument of the evening, this is what it was all about.

Yehoshua was willing to talk only about Judaism in Israel - Wieseltier tried to offer the "portability of Judaism." An idea that is not only about place and state ? but bigger (one can't suspect that Wieseltier is not supportive enough of Israel - he just wanted to emphasize the other alternatives). Yehoshua can think whatever he wants about his own idea of Judaism, but the one Wieseltier was trying to talk about is the one the crowd wanted to discuss, as it is the one most relevant to them.

Israel

More than anything else, this evening was somewhat sad, as it showed the huge gap between Israel and the Jewish Diaspora. The problem, I must admit, rests mostly with Israelis, who do not understand (well, I'm generalizing here, many Israelis do understand) the extent to which the North American Jewish world is now a world to itself. They don't comprehend the possibility of a "Jewish Renaissance" here that is mostly not about Israel - and that it is in Israel's interest to be a part of, and not the other way around.

Yesterday, I wrote a piece about the Fifth Jew, for which I got plenty of attention from (mostly angry) readers. (Read the article, the blog that followed, and some reactions here). They weren't satisfied with the comment I made at the end of it: "Because the fifth Jew, to put it rather bluntly, is not only less 'Israeli,' but also less Jewish."

Today, let me make a complementary point that might be as inflammatory to my Israeli readers, but in which I believe as much: If the Israeli Jew does not find a way to better connect with Diaspora Jewry, it will not only make him less of a "Jew" - but also a lesser "Israeli."

Egypt: Non-denying Holocaust book

Book published recently in Egypt gives, for first time, truthful picture of Nazis' crimes Itamar Eichner ynet

A new book which does not deny the Holocaust and the number of Jews murdered in it has been published in Egypt in recent days, Israel's leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported Tuesday.

The book, "The Holocaust of the Jews – concentration camp, Auschwitz Birkenau" was written in Arabic and is 325 pages long. The author is Dr. Ramsis Otz.

The book is bases on research carried out in the West and in the countries of the former Soviet bloc, and presents the truthful and known picture regarding what took place in the concentration camp – a first for Egypt.

The book includes the set up the camp, the Nazi plan for the destruction of the Jews, means of genocide, the incinerators, injuries to the bodies of the victims, Joseph Mengele, Rudolph Hess, the women and children in the camp, and more.

Sources in the Israeli embassy in Egypt say that the book has high importance due to the strengthening of voices in Egypt and the Arab world which deny the Holocaust, doubt the number of Jews murdered, and attributing the Holocaust to Zionist media manipulation.
In addition to that, few of the studies in the Arab world and specifically in Egypt address the Holocaust and the death camps in the way that the book does. The author used terms in the book such as mass destruction, forced labor, and Holocaust.
Dahab and the Cohen's
One person who will most certainly not be returning to Sinai in the near future is 18-year-old Gdalia Cohen, who was dining in a fish restaurant in Dahab when terror struck and suffered a shock in light of the difficult sights. Only last week, Cohen lost his grandmother Marcel Cohen in the Tel Aviv central bus station terror attack.

Oracle's Linux Push Is a No-Brainer

Oracle wants to cook up its own stack, based on Linux and has pondered purchasing Novell as a quick way to get its own Linux flavor to kick-start the project, Larry Ellison recently told the Financial Times.
That's a no-brainer. Oracle has been pushing Linux like mad for some time. Small wonder, given that it provides Oracle users who run on Microsoft's operating system and applications with an alternative stack.

The IOUG (Independent Oracle Users Group) recently put out the results of a survey showing that only 7 percent of 812 surveyed Oracle shops run exclusively on Oracle, with the Microsoft product set being the closest contender at these sites: Seven out of 10 respondents support SQL Server.

Oracle's Linux push has paid off, with Linux in the coming year set to unseat HP-UX as the dominant operating system on which to run Oracle technology, according to the IOUG's survey.

Forget IBM and DB2; Microsoft is Oracle's most threatening rival.

Microsoft's control over the Windows operating system and its applications have given it a complete stack for some time now.

More recently, Red Hat's announced acquisition of JBoss means that it, too, is set to be a serious threat to Oracle, given that it has grown that much closer to offering a complete stack.

So why not buy Red Hat? As Ellison told the Financial Times, the price was just too steep, particularly when you're talking about open-source—in other words, free—software.


"I don't see how we could possibly buy Red Hat... I'm not going to spend $5 billion, or $6 billion, for something that can just be so completely wiped off the map," Ellison was quoted as saying in the FT. He also said that he had considered making an offer on Novell.


Novell is too expensive as well. Why pay billions for Novell SUSE Linux when there are much cheaper and more deployed Linux distributions out there, with robust communities in place, to be had for probably what would amount to a few million?

I had a recent conversation with Richard Monson-Haefel, an analyst with Burton, in which he told me that Ellison is likely telling us he doesn't have to buy a company with a huge existing open-source presence.

Instead, Ellison likely wants to buy an existing variation of Linux around which Oracle can build a community.

Second Page: Strong contenders.

Ubuntu and Mandriva are two strong contenders, Monson-Haefel believes. They're both on the Top 10 Linux distribution list.

He thinks Ubuntu in particular is a likely candidate to play the starring role as the Linux operating system in an Oracle stack.

Ubuntu, which has only been in distribution since 2004, is now cited as the most popular of all the distributions. It's based on what's considered to be the "unstable" branch of Debian and, according to Linux Forums, features "a fast release cycle, up to date and numerous packages, fast download mirrors, great documentation and even free shipment of CDs."

According to Linux Forums, it's unclear whether the distributing company, Canonical Ltd., makes a profit off the distribution, but that's reportedly not the main purpose or priority. Hence, its only "con" is considered to be an unviable business model.

A possibly unviable business model: That's one thing Oracle, one of the world's largest software vendors, would certainly be able to help with.

Besides it being an ideal target, Ubuntu also is darn flexible, serving both as a desktop and server platform.

"Ubuntu really makes a lot of sense" as an acquisition, Monson-Haefel said.

"It's a popular open-source platform, as well as being a desktop and server platform. If you want to create a full stack, that's an important element."


If you could buy the most popular Linux distribution for a figure in the low millions, compared with buying Novell for what could have amounted to billions, it's not too hard a choice, he said.

"I don't see where the hesitation would be," he said.

What do users think of all this? I would have thought I'd be hearing from users who would be leery at the idea of having Oracle control everything from the operating system on up through the database, management tools, middleware, development tools and applications.

But as Ari Kaplan, president of the IOUG, pointed out in a recent conversation, based on recent history, Oracle can be trusted not to lock anybody into an Oracle-only setup.

"Based on recent history, you can still run PeopleSoft on IBM or other databases," he said.


"It would be a mistake for Oracle" to do otherwise, he said. After all, it's a heterogeneous world, as the IOUG's survey pointed out, with Oracle users running Windows, Linux, HP-UX, mainframe—you name it.

It's up to Oracle to make the Oracle stack compelling from the customer's point of view, Kaplan pointed out. And that's not too hard to imagine, given that a company like Teradata has developed its database to be so tightly coupled with hardware and software and the operating system that Teradata also owns.

An Oracle stack: Tell me why this isn't going to pose a serious threat to Microsoft. Tell me why this wouldn't be a technology boon for Oracle users.

You'll have to spell it out, because from where I stand, it all looks good.

Nokia:CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Wireless handset maker Nokia is hoping to speed the process of product innovation through a new research and development effort launched in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Nokia and MIT officially opened a new joint research facility in MIT's Kendall Square neighborhood here April 20, telling media and analysts gathered for the event that the facility's existence will greatly improve the two organizations' ability to share breakthroughs in wireless technology.

The research center will specifically tap into work being conducted at MIT's CSAIL (Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory).

While Nokia has teamed with MIT for research efforts since as far back as the early 1980s, officials said the opening of the Cambridge research center will allow for the sort of daily interaction necessary to move development efforts forward at a rapid pace, and push some of those technologies into Nokia's products sooner.


U.S. Completes E-Passport Testing

Reporter's Notebook: Testing of biometric passports and e-passport readers is complete, and the United States plans to implement the readers for processing Visa Waiver Program (VWP) visitors by the end of October.

E-Passports contain an individual's biographic information and a digital photograph on a contactless chip embedded in the document. The Department of Homeland Security hopes biometric technologies will prevent the use of fraudulent or stolen international travel documents.

Travelers applying for admission under the VWP are allowed to enter the United States for up to 90 days for business or pleasure without obtaining a non-immigrant visa. Those VWP travelers that are issued a passport after Oct. 26 must present an e-passport to enter the country.

The State Department plans to begin issuing e-passports to U.S. citizens this summer.

Originally scheduled for implementation two years ago, critics have complained about the lack of documentation issued by the government. In particular, the security industry has questioned just how secure the information contained on the contactless chips really is.

DHS Deputy Secretary Michael Jackson says not to worry.

"We are adopting biometric, electronically-based and secure travel documents that are tamper-resistant, yet provide a very convenient way to move back and forth across our borders," Jackson said in a statement this week.

He added that the DHS recently completed testing e-passports and readers with Basic Access Control (BAC) at San Francisco International Airport.

According to Jackson, BAC "enhances" the document security by preventing the unauthorized reading -- known as "skimming" -- of information contained on the e-passport.

"We have now successfully completed e-passport technology testing in a live environment. Working with Visa Waiver countries, we will begin to deploy these important security enhancements this year," Jackson said.

Your Tax Dollars at Work. Speaking of homeland security, the Government Accountability Office issued a report last month stating that the DHS and other government agencies still have no real plan or system in place to share sensitive, but unclassified, terrorist-related information.

"More than four years after September 11, the nation lacks government-wide policies and processes to help agencies integrate the myriad ongoing efforts ... to improve the sharing of terrorism-related information that is critical to protecting our homeland," the report states.

The Homeland Security Act of 2002 and the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 both call for improved information sharing between agencies.

"A large amount of terrorism information is already stored electronically in systems, but there remains an unknown quantity of relevant information not captured and stored electronically," the report continues.

"However, many users are not connected to these systems ... the information about terrorists, their plans, and their activities is fragmentary."

Perhaps the DHS could put it all on contactless chips.

Trading For Jobs. Being President Bush's United States Trade Representative (USTR) is proving to be a good career stepping stone for Republicans loyal to the White House.

Earlier this week, Bush nominated the current USTR, Rob Portman, to be the new director of the Office of Management and Budget. Portman replaced Robert Zoellick, who is now the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State.

Bush nominated Deputy USTR Susan C. Schwab to replace Portman and used the occasion to tout his administration's free trade successes.

"Trade is one of the most powerful engines of growth and job creation. America accounts for about 5 percent of the world's population, and that means that 95 percent of our potential customers live overseas," Bush said in a Rose Garden ceremony Tuesday morning.

"So my administration has taken an aggressive agenda to break down barriers to American exports across the world."

Bush noted that when he took office in 2000, the United States had three free trade agreements in place. Since then, Zoellick and Portman negotiated free trade agreements with 11 countries with another 18 pending.

"Last year, the countries with which we have free trade agreements represented about 7 percent of the economy abroad, but about 42 percent of our exports," Bush said.

"Lowering trade barriers to the sale of our goods and services helps provide a level playing field for American workers and farmers and ranchers."

According to the American Electronics Association, U.S. high-tech exports increased by 4 percent last year with exports of $199 billion in 2005. Tech exports to China increased by 14 percent.

The bad news: imports from China increased by 26 percent.

The ninth victim in Monday's attack was identified on Tuesday as Marcel Cohen, a 73-year-old tourist from Nice, France.
Cohen was in Israel to attend the wedding of her grandchild and spend Passover with her family of 11 grandchildren, three daughters who live in France and a son who lives in Jerusalem.
She will be laid to rest Tuesday afternoon in Jerusalem and her three daughters will arrive in Israel after Passover which ends on Wednesday evening.

The excitement that the discovery is arousing is comparable to that aroused by the discovery of a new star by means of a powerful telescope - when a new technology (or luck) confirms the conclusion that the astronomers had reached prior based on calculations alone. After all, we have long known about the existence of this lost gospel and therefore it was possible to guess its contents, more or less. Good is evilIrenaeus, the Bishop of Lyons, was able to confirm in his major book “Against All Heresies,” written circa the year 180 C.E., the existence of a Gospel According to Judas Iscariot in one of the Gnostic sects, which he called the “Cainites.” The members of the sect interpreted the biblical figures in the opposite of the usual way: They considered the protagonists (like Noah and Moses) to be evil and the antagonists (like Korach and Cain) to be good. Moreover, the God of the Bible, the Creator of the universe, whom they called Hysteria (from the Greek for “womb” - this may be derived from the Hebrew epithet rahman, “merciful,” which is etymologically related to the word for womb) was perceived by them as evil. According to Irenaeus, these Gnostics’ antinomian approach led them to preach wild sexual behavior, aimed at disobeying God. When engaging in forbidden sexual relations, the Cainites were supposed to declare: “O, Angel, I am using your creation. O Ruler, I am carrying out your action!” The fact that Judas Iscariot, the traitor who handed Jesus over to his death, was the hero of this sect did not improve its reputation among the various Christian churches. In addition to the four canonical Gospels, during the first centuries of Christianity dozens of other texts were given that title and attributed to various disciples or associates of Jesus, including Thomas, Mary, Jacob and Phillip. Gospels were also written according to the Egyptians, Hebrews, the Evangelist of Truth and more. These evangelical books were defined before the end of the second century as apocryphal to the crystallizing canon of the New Testament, and their authors were labeled as heretics. Therefore most of them have not survived, or have survived only in translation - not in their Greek originals. The discovery of every such text helps us draw the portrait of early Christianity more precisely (or less vaguely). The text under discussion depicts a conversation between Jesus and Judas three days before Passover and the death of Jesus. Jesus reveals to his close disciple the secrets of the heavenly kingdom and asks Judas to hand him over to the authorities and thus “sacrifice the man that clothes me.” Only thus, with the help of Judas, was it possible to realize the divine plan. The true essence of Jesus is entirely spiritual: It is his soul, and it is imprisoned, supposedly, in his material body. This anthropological dualism was already present in the Orphic movement in Greece during the first half of the first century B.C.E. (“somo sema” - “The body is a tomb,” said Plato), and it is one of the building blocks of the radical dualistic interpretation of early Christianity. This kind of interpretation of Christianity was developed by the stream called Gnosis (“knowledge” in Greek), that is - knowledge of the secret of redemption, which is hidden from most people. This stream, in different forms and sects, was the main challenge to the crystallization of Christianity in the second century. Jesus laughsA striking characteristic of the new text is the fact that it depicts Jesus as laughing a lot. This is a laughter of superiority and scorn for the blindness of others - including his disciples, who do not understand the essence of things, nor the significance of their acts. This laughter is typical of the figure of the Gnostic Jesus, and is familiar to us from other Gnostic texts, especially those found toward the end of World War II at Nag Hammadi, south of Fayum. The Nag Hammadi “library” is comprised of approximately 50 Gnostic texts in 13 codices in the Coptic language (into which books had been translated from the original Greek). The texts had not been known beforehand. The discovery at Nag Hammadi, which is similar in importance to the discovery of the scrolls at Qumran, allowed us to understand rather precisely the processes of the emergence of the Gnosis and the details of its extensive mythology. The new text, along with three other texts that were found in the same codex, is a significant addition to the Nag Hammadi discovery. Jesus laughs at the sight of the stupidity of the “rulers” (Archons) - the angels of evil. These act under the command of the god Saklas (the Fool - related to the Hebrew word ksil), who is the God of Israel, the creator of our material and evil world. Saklas and his cohorts intend to crucify Jesus, but they succeed only in killing the material body, an empty shell that the spiritual redeemer succeeded in exiting before the calamity. Therefore Jesus laughs. Parallel to IsaacSome time ago I suggested the hypothesis that Jesus’ laughter in the Gnostic texts hints at constructing the figure of Jesus as a parallel to the biblical Isaac (whose name comes from the Hebrew root for laughter), who is also saved at the last minute from an attempt to sacrifice him. The new text supports this hypothesis, both because of the centrality of laughter and because it includes a probing discussion of sacrifice in general, and human sacrifice in particular. The possibility of seeing Jesus as an avatar of Isaac hints that the first Gnostics were Jews, and that at the basis of their interpretation stood the difficulty of acknowledging that the messiah died (and in such a humiliating way). The new discovery helps us draw a more precise picture of the complex religious situation that existed at the inception of Christianity. However, there is of course nothing in the Gospel According to Judas that brings us closer to the historical figures of Judas or Jesus. There is also no basis to the claim that had this text not disappeared for 1,700 years, Christian anti-Semitism would not have developed like it did. Judas is a positive figure for only one marginal sect, which was defined as heretical and whose opinions were considered false and shocking to the major Christian theologians as early as the second century. Furthermore, the Gnostics’ attitude toward the God of Israel as an inferior deity and the Prophets of Israel as his minions is a clear example of what can be called metaphysical anti-Semitism. Traitor or hero, evildoer or righteous - there are few options, but they are dizzying, in the relations between the Devil and God. Literature is perhaps able to absorb today some of the echoes of the early heresies, and thus Marcel Pagnol in his play “Judas” and Jorge Luis Borges in his story “Three Versions of Judas” succeeded in our own times in reconstructing the theology of the Gospel According to Judas: The Messiah only appears to be suffering, but in secret he is laughing and announcing, “In the Kingdom of Heaven, the traitors will become heroes.”

Suicide Bombing in Israel Kills 9; Hamas Approves

TEL AVIV, April 17 — A Palestinian suicide bomber carried out the deadliest attack on Israel in almost two years on Monday when he detonated his explosives at a falafel restaurant in Tel Aviv — an act that Hamas, which leads the new Palestinian government, called legitimate.

Nine people and the bomber were killed and dozens wounded in the blast, at a small restaurant that was hit by a suicide bomber just three months ago, on Jan. 19. In that attack, 20 Israelis were injured.

Though the bombing was carried out by Islamic Jihad, a particularly radical faction that is not part of the government, spokesmen for Hamas and the Palestinian Interior Ministry said the blast was a legitimate response to what they called Israeli aggression.

Similarly, Islamic Jihad released a video in which Sami Hammad, 21, from outside Jenin, on the West Bank, said his bombing was dedicated to the thousands of Palestinians jailed by Israel. "There will be more such operations," he said.

Even so, the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, condemned the attack, reflecting a split in the Palestinian leadership.

Israel said it held the Hamas-led government ultimately responsible. "They are responsible because their leaders are encouraging these attacks," said Gideon Meir, a senior official at the Israeli Foreign Ministry. "It doesn't matter which group did this; it all comes from the same school of terrorism."

Kofi Annan, the United Nations secretary general, urged the Palestinian Authority to condemn the attack, while the White House reiterated that it would have "no contact" with "a Palestinian government that encourages or tolerates terrorism."

Israel did not say how it would respond. But near midnight, Israeli aircraft fired missiles at a metal workshop in Gaza City, causing damage but no injuries. The military said the shop was used to manufacture rockets that are fired at Israel.

The bombing is also likely to intensify the almost daily exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants.

The explosion ripped through the restaurant just hours before Israel's new Parliament was sworn in, and Ehud Olmert, prime minister-designate, told the legislators meeting in Jerusalem, "We had hoped to celebrate the Israeli democracy today in a different atmosphere, and now we are again forced to cope with murderous terror."

At the restaurant, tiles and wires dangled from the ceiling. The street was covered with shards of glass. Blood pooled on the sidewalk and speckled the sides of parked cars.

About 60 people were wounded, including two cousins, David Manshirov, 17, and Jahoun Ismilov, 17, who worked in the kitchen and were also hurt in the January bombing.

Mr. Manshirov said his family, which emigrated three years ago from Georgia, the former Soviet republic, was poor, so he had no choice but to keep working at the restaurant.

The restaurant is on a busy corner in a gritty section of Tel Aviv where many foreign workers now live. It is considered easier for a bomber to blend in with the crowd in this neighborhood than in other parts of the city. The street where the bombing took place, Neve Shaanan, has been hit by six suicide bombings in the past four years.

The restaurant — called The Mayor's Falafel — had placed a security guard at its entrance after the January attack. According to witnesses, the guard stopped the bomber on Monday and asked to see his bag. At that moment, the bomber detonated his explosives, the witnesses said. The guard was believed to be among those killed.

Islamic Jihad, which has rejected an informal truce observed by some Palestinian groups, has carried out eight of the nine Palestinian suicide bombings since the beginning of 2005.

Abu Ahmed, an Islamic Jihad spokesman, called the bombing "part of the national resistance against the Israeli crimes."

The blast was the deadliest in Israel since a double suicide bombing on Aug. 31, 2004. That explosion killed 16 people in Beersheba, in the south.

The Palestinian response to the latest bombing once again underscored the tension between Mr. Abbas, who opposes such attacks and seeks negotiations with Israel, and Hamas, which now controls the cabinet and the legislature, and has carried out the largest number of suicide bombings against Israel and rejects negotiations.

Hamas took control of the Palestinian Authority government last month after winning elections in January, and has largely abided by an informal truce for more than a year. But the group says it will not lay down its weapons and has not called on other factions to stop attacks.

Asked about the bombing, a Hamas spokesman, Sami Abu Zuhri, said, "The resistance is a legal and natural reaction to the Israeli crimes, and the Palestinian people have the right to defend themselves."

But Mr. Abbas said, "These kinds of attacks harm the Palestinian interest, and we as an authority and government must move to stop it."

The Palestinian ministries, controlled by Hamas, issued no such denunciations.

The new Palestinian government has been in office less than three weeks, but it faces urgent problems. The United States and the European Union regard Hamas as a terrorist group and are refusing to deal with any of its members, inside or outside the government.

The new Palestinian government is also struggling with a major financial crisis, which has been made worse by this isolation, and has been unable to pay last month's wages to its 140,000 employees.

The bombing brought a new round of Western criticism directed at Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.

"The burden of responsibility for preventing terrorist attacks such as this one rests with the Palestinian Authority," said the White House spokesman, Scott McClellan. "We have noted reactions by several Palestinian terrorist groups, including Hamas, that defend or even applaud the barbaric act of terror committed in Tel Aviv today, as we have noted President Abbas's quick denunciation of it."

The Israeli security forces have barred Palestinians from entering Israel since March 11, according to the military. But Palestinian bombers have managed to slip into Israel despite such bans in the past and have frequently struck during holiday periods.

In northern Gaza, a 19-year-old Palestinian, Mamdouh Obeid, was killed Monday by an Israeli artillery shell, according to Palestinian medical workers, who said two other young men were wounded.

(VIDEO) Terror disrupts Passover celebrations once again: Nine people were killed Monday after a Palestinian suicide bomber detonated himself at a crowded fast food stand near Tel Aviv's old central bus station, in the city's southern Neve Sha'anan neighborhood.
At least 68 people were wounded in the huge blast, which was heard kilometers away, including one person who is in criticial condition and nine others who sustained serious wounds. Two of the victims were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, while a third victim died on the operating table.

The name of one bombing victim, Philip Balahsan from Ashdod, was cleared for publication Monday evening. Balahsan was at the site of the bombing with his two children. His family has been notified.

The explosion occurred around 1:30 p.m. at a shawarma stand, where a previous bombing took place. This time, however, the blast was much more powerful and deadly.

According to a videotape released by the Islamic Jihad in Jenin, the attack was carried out by Sami Salim Khamad, who entered Israel from the West Bank. Fatah's al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades also claimed responsibility for the attack.

According to one eyewitness account, the terrorist entered the store and detonated himself when a security guard at the site asked him to open his bag for inspection.

A short while after the explosion, police forces engaged in a chase after a blue Mitsubishi vehicle seen fleeing the area of the attack carrying three people. The vehicle was stopped a short while later and the three suspects were taken into interrogation. Later, the suspects were released after it was established they were not connected to the bombing.
Yael Garti, who witnessed the explosion, told Ynet: "I saw people running in every direction. The shock was felt in neighboring buildings. Ambulances arrived within minutes. Many people gathered in the area."

The owner of a nearby store said that he is already used to the sounds of terror attacks, but that this time the explosion was extremely powerful.

"When we left the store, we noticed a lot of injured people on the floor. We rushed back to the store and shut it down," he said.

Brigadier-General Danny Chen, deputy commander of the Tel Aviv District, told reporters: "This is a strategic, sensitive and problematic place in Tel Aviv."

The previous terror attack in the area took place in January, when an Islamic Jihad suicide bomber detonated himself next to the same shawarma stand, wounding 32 people. Following the attack, the stand owners positioned a security guard in the area.
Throughout the Passover holiday, security forces were dealing with concrete terror warnings. Large forces were deployed across the country, in central junctions and in entertainment venues. However, there was no concrete warning regarding plans for an attack in southern Tel Aviv.

Immediately after the attack, security forces raised their alert level across the country.

Italy's centre-left opposition has won a narrow victory in the lower house of parliament, official results say.
It won 49.8% of the vote against 49.7% for the governing centre-right.

The head of the centre-left coalition, former Prime Minister Romano Prodi, told cheering supporters in Rome: "Victory has arrived."

But the outcome of the Senate vote is still unclear. And Mr Prodi's claim has been contested by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right coalition.

Mr Berlusconi's spokesman Paolo Bonaiuti said his bloc would demand a "scrupulous" check of election ballots.

The lower and upper houses have equal power in Italy's electoral system. One bloc must win both to prevent parliamentary stalemate.

Knesset women must form defensive wall against ultra-Orthodox

Last week's elections brought good news and bad news, news that may
even overshadow other results.



The best news of all is the disintegration of the Likud. A clear
majority has voted for "convergence," an end to the occupation and a
two-state solution, with or without negotiations.

That the country's social agenda has gained a strong voice is also
good news, but this news comes with a regressive, black cloud hanging
over it: A return to ultra-Orthodox extortion. Historically, in
Israel as in other countries – the combination of right-wing
nationalism and an orthodoxy that rejects human rights is the most
dangerous of all.


Social camouflage

The haredim (ultra-Orthodox) may wave the banner of "concern for the
weaker classes," but their concern is selective and parasitic. If
they were truly concerned for the public good, it would be okay. But
by using the camouflage of the word "social" they have managed to
hinder true solutions for the problems facing general society.

Government handouts cannot come instead of work. There is no
substitute for comprehensive education, respect for teachers,
professional training and rewards for working women, not even a
haredi deputy education minister or additional funds for an education
system that fails to teach citizenship or science.

We are all familiar with deceptive campaign promises, about the
overlap between party platforms and empty promises. But now it is the
day after. People who voted for the Labor or Meretz parties, or even
the Pensioners party, had no intention of bringing back the haredi
monopoly to our lives. Of burying the chance of having public
transportation on Shabbat, civil marriage, or equal rights for gays.

Misleading smiles

Therefore, the smiling images of Amir Peretz and Shas leader Eli
Yishai together, claiming to share a joint agenda – is misleading. A
joint agenda must include social equality, women's representation,
huge financial allotment to close gaps between Jews and Arabs,
support for cultural institutions and providing accessibility for
all.

At the end of the day the haredim – Shas and United Torah Judaism,
with outside support from the National Religious Party - must provide
for everyone. Special funds in exchange for their support here and
there for other sectors, rather than overall support for a different
Israel – a secular, liberal, normal, Jewish country of all its
citizens, one that guarantees equal rights and demands equal
responsibilities.



But the ultra-Orthodox reject all of these. This does not disqualify
them from becoming secondary partners in government, but they should
not have the set the government's direction.



Held hostage



The secular must be open about just why they have not used the vacuum
created by the disappearance of the Shinui Party to raise the flag of
freedom from religion and religious coercion. Their malicious
gloating, their "we told you so" and personal infighting turned off
many voters, and not only the remnants of the party that had the
arrogance to represent them.



Meretz, for its part, failed to place enough stress on its civil
reform platform. The Labor Party has never led a "social revolution"
for human rights or religious pluralism, thus giving the ultra-
Orthodox legitimacy on the basis of fighting for social issues and
the weaker classes. In doing so, they squandered a huge opportunity.



Now, we find ourselves – the Labor Party, liberals in Kadima and all
of Meretz – held hostage, yet again, to the Knesset's haredim.



They will decide vote after vote, including issues regarding
diplomatic matters.



Setting limits



I propose, even demand, that the incoming Prime Minister set a series
of basic principles for joining the government, including civil
reform and religious pluralism. Parties who fail to agree to these
conditions should be disqualified from joining the government.




The haredim will support the popular demand to include more medicines
in the national health basket, and we will demand public
transportation on Shabbat. At the end of the day, there is no reason
their voices should drown out ours.



Then there is the lonely women's voice in the current Knesset. Won't
the haredim work to oppose women's advancement and funding? We must
work to ensure "women's power," including equal pay, compensation for
child care, and funding for women's diseases. More than anything, we
must work to ensure comprehensive, free, quality education at a high
standard, rather than to become twittering fools opposite the
Knesset's haredim.



Shelly Yechimovitz, Dalia Itzik, Nadia Hilo, Yuli Tamir, Zahava Gal-
On, Tzipi Livni and Limor Livnat must form a defensive wall against
the distortions of male ultra-Orthodox MKs.



This is not the time to remain passive like sheep. The time for
action has come.

Meretz faction chief Zahava Gal-On on Thursday heaped more criticism on party leader Yossi Beilin for the poor performance in Tuesday's election, and nominated herself as a worthy successor.

Meretz lost two seats in the elections for the next Knesset, taking it from its current six to just four. Although party regulations stipulate new elections for the chairmanship within one year, senior officials within Meretz are working to expedite the date of the elections in the wake of Tuesday's failure.

"Meretz needs to return to being a party in the spirit of Shulamit Aloni, which protects human rights," Gal-On told Israel Radio on Thursday, adding that she sees herself as a worthy leadership candidate.

"The drop in [seat] numbers calls for soul-searching and taking responsibility," she said. "There has been a failure here in the leadership of the chairman of the party."

Gal-On had announced her intention to run Wednesday night, along with MK Ran Cohen, Beilin's runner-up in the last leadership race.

"Meretz needs to internalize the lessons in the most courageous way possible," Cohen told Haaretz on Wednesday afternoon. "Five years ago, we were 10 seats. This is a flop that requires learning of lessons and not just personal lessons."

"In the coming year, according to the party constitution, there will be elections for chairman," Cohen, who criticized the messages and the management of the campaign, said.

"We have to think differently," Cohen said. "The way is to place the socio-economic issue at the head of Meretz's efforts on an equal footing with the diplomatic-security matter."

Cohen added that he advocated that exact policy during his campaign which ended in defeat to Beilin.

"We could have preceded the others by raising the social flag, but when we failed to do that we lost some of our supporters to parties which did advance those issues - Labor and the Pensioners," Cohen said. "Everyone needs to learn their lessons, not just Beilin, but also whoever rejected my proposal."

Throughout the campaign, party officials repeated their criticism of Meretz's increasing emphasis on the diplomatic policy and the Geneva Initiative while toning down the social banner.

Ehud Olmert’s ruling Kadima - 29-32 out of 120 Knesset seats (in the lead but below poll estimates), Labor – 22 (held its ground), Likud crashed to 11, Russian immigrants’ Israel Beitenu – 13-14 (up), ultra- religious Shas – 10-11, anti-evacuation National Union-NRP – 8-9, Torah Judaism – 5-6, left-wing Meretz – 5. The big surprise is the senior citizens who for the first time crossed the threshold with a dramatic 8 mandates.

Some 4.5 million Israelis were eligible to cast their votes Tuesday, March 28, for the 17th Knesset and their next government. They had a choice of 31 party lists.

Another half a million overseas voters and the army cast their votes earlier. Voting day is a national holiday

Of 'phishing' for data and fishing for gifts

It's summertime. A season of vacations and weddings, and today's column includes not one, but two financial stories along that theme.

The first should be titled, "Gone Phishing." That's not a misspelling, nor is it a vacation idea. It's the name of a new identity theft scam that is sweeping the Internet.

I've heard about e-mails that purport to be from your financial institution, asking for personal information. But when one landed in my own e-mailbox this week, I didn't immediately recognize the scam.

The logo of my bank, Bank One, was identical to messages I sometimes receive about new features in their online bill pay service. And the return e-mail said it came from service@bankone.com. The message started out as an official sounding warning: "Because of our concern about the safety and integrity of the online banking community..." So I read further.

The e-mail asked me to "take a few minutes to review and update" my information as a security precaution. It advised me that if I did not reply within a week, my account would be deleted. It asked me to click on a link in the message to input my information.

A clear scam



It was clearly a scam. A bank would never delete an account. A bank always has your information and never asks you to input information over an insecure e-mail link. And the word "delete" was misspelled as "deletation."

But people do follow those instructions. The link leads you directly into a trap. Once you input your account and PIN, you've given away the keys to your financial life.

Note: This scam has nothing to do with the safety of online bill pay! Your online bill pay account is secure and guaranteed against fraud. This has everything to do with Internet scams and identity theft.

Every major bank has been hit with this "phishing" scam. Con artists blast massive amounts of e-mails, hoping they'll land in the box of someone who actually does have an online bill-pay account at the bank. It only takes a few responses to make this scam profitable. So here are some tips to avoid being taken:

*Be alert for scams. Check at your bank's Web site for warnings. Citibank and Bank One even post examples of e-mail phishing scams.

*Never reply with information. Never give out information when someone asks for it. Never use a link.

*Report attempts to the bank. Every bank Web site has a link or a toll-free number to report these attempts. And don't be embarrassed if you were tricked into giving away information. If you report it immediately, your account will be protected until you can choose a new PIN.

*Forward scam e-mails to the Federal Trade Commission. Send that e-mail to the FTC so they can take action and see how huge the problem is becoming. The address to forward that scam email is: uce@ftc.gov

*Change your password and PINs. Banks advise that you use separate PINs and passwords for different accounts, so if one is stolen, your entire financial life is not revealed. And though it's a pain to remember new PINs, they advise changing those codes twice a year.

Remember, your grandparents probably didn't lock their front door. And the first automobiles didn't have individual keys. But we live in a different era now. The message is not to avoid technology, but to use it wisely.

Perfect wedding gift



And that reminder leads me to mention a new idea for that wedding or graduation gift this summer. It's a Web site called www.GiftofStock.com. In fact, if you're the one getting married, you can register for shares of stock you'd like to receive.

The stock gift includes automatic enrollment in the company-sponsored Dividend Reinvestment Plan or DRIP. So this is a gift that can keep growing as part of a long-term investment plan. About 1,300 major companies offer these DRIP plans, and they're all listed at the Web site.

The recipient gets a mock stock certificate announcing the gift, but more importantly, the right to continue investing in shares of the company stock without paying commission or going through a broker. Check the Web site for details on ordering and pricing.

The Internet can bring great financial benefits, as well as challenges. And it requires new skills at discerning the real from the fake. But it's worth it. That's The Savage Truth.

The encounter, which stunned all Israel, is reconstructed by TIME Correspondent Marsh Clark: Robert Aroyo, his wife Preeti, and their children Marc-Daniel, 7, and Abigail, 4, had lived in Israel only eight months. Born on Malta, raised in England, Aroyo abandoned an advertising job in London to bring his family to the land of promise, where he felt they all belonged. Settled in the Tel Aviv suburb of Kiron, the Aroyos often spent Sabbaths touring their new country. One bright Saturday they set out south to visit Gaza. (from TIME)
A Palestinian Boy threw a grenade in to there car. The Children died. Preeti was badly wounded and Robert had blood all over him.
I visited the Aroyo's at Beer-Sheba Hospital. I was in the Army.
We lived in Kiron and my parents knew them.
As a result Ariel Sharon "Went into" the refugee camps in Gaza.
