Dina Porat: The Zionist Leadership in Palestine and the Holocaust, 1939-1945.
Editorial Reviews From Library Journal
The shadow of World War II still looms large. Though the extent of the atrocities committed against the Jews during this period is well known, there has not hitherto been a comprehensive study on the reactions of the Palestinian Jewish community (the Yishuv ), particularly its leadership, to the fate of their European brethren. The few articles and smaller studies that have appeared over the past two decades indicate that this leadership did not do everything it could to save European Jewry. In this comprehensive study, Porat (Tel Aviv Univ.) examines what the Yishuv' s leadership knew, when, and how they responded. Based on previously unexamined archival sources, she answers these questions convincingly and with sensitivity and perception. This will no doubt be the standard work on the subject. It includes a comprehensive bibliography and biographical glossary. Highly recommended for Holocaust studies collections.
