Haaretz - Israel News - Article List: "Direct election of MKs

Regarding 'A vote of no confidence' by Shahar Ilan, Haaretz, April 26

The article tells us that 47 percent of the public is of the opinion that our present Knesset is worse than its predecessors. It is now abundantly clear that our present electoral system, wherein the Knesset member is responsible to a political party and not a constituency, is a failure and must be changed. Knesset members must be elected directly by name and be responsible to those who elected them. This is true representative democracy. But changing the electoral system requires action by the Knesset. I don't see the present Knesset enacting such legislation. The only way to get this electoral system in place is for a political party to adopt it as a major plank in its platform, and then receive overwhelming support in the next general election In this way we could create a truly democratic and responsive Knesset in which we could all be proud.
